NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CN) — A dormitory in the heart of Brooklyn’s historic Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood is now required to have a minimum of three bathrooms and two full-sized bedrooms for students, as part of a broader crackdown on student dorms.
The new dorms at Stuyvesants is located at 431 Bedford Street in a building formerly known as the M.I.T. and M.
Ed.
D. dormitries.
The rules require all students to share a room with one other person or group of students, with a maximum of two bathrooms per person and two bedrooms per student, according to the college’s website.
A dormitory is a place for students to live, study, and have a shared space with their peers and other students.
They also serve as a place to work and socialize.
According to the university, students who are living in a dormitory must use a shared toilet for bathing, washing dishes, and showering.
If a student has to use the shared toilet, they are not allowed to share the water with others.
Students can still use a common shower room or restroom, but will have to use a separate toilet for those.
Students must also use a bathroom separate from their shared spaces, or have a private bathroom, but not both, for all bathroom needs.
“The new rules require dorms to have showers and toilets separate from other dorms, which is good for everyone involved,” the college said in a statement.
The dorms will also have to allow students to stay with roommates who have specific housing needs.
If students can’t find a roommate, they will have three days to find one and move into the dorm.
The college said dormitory rules are being enforced at other colleges across the country, including St. Louis University and the University of California, Berkeley.
A university spokesperson said the dormitory rule was not the first in New York City.
The university does not currently have a rule in place in Manhattan, where there are currently four dorms in a single building.
Stuyesants was built in 1917, but was sold in 2010 to the University Heights Corporation, which operates the Stuyesant campus.
The city has allowed dorms since at least 2007.
But the rules require students to use shared bathrooms.
The college also says students can be required to stay at a dorm with one roommate, but only one.
